Five Reasons to Watch Derry Girls

Sadie Mittendorf, Staff Writer

Derry Girls is a sitcom that follows the lives of a group of teenagers growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland amidst The Troubles, the political conflict of Northern Ireland in the 1990s. It first aired in 2018, and recently ended with its third season this year. All three seasons of Derry Girls are available to watch on Netflix. In light of the recent finale of Derry Girls, here are five reasons why you should watch it:

1. The humor

Despite the show’s serious background, one of its notable characteristics is its comedy. With a combination of recurring jokes and new outlandish situations that the characters get stuck in nearly every episode, Derry Girls never fails to make viewers laugh.

2. The characters

Derry Girls centers around a group of five teenagers, whose unique personalities create an entertaining group dynamic. All of the show’s characters have strong, well-developed personalities that are both entertaining and relatable for viewers. Even minor characters have something to add to the story.

3. The handling of serious subjects

Derry Girls addresses The Troubles through a perfect combination of light-hearted comedy and touching moments that are seamlessly threaded throughout the plot. Despite often being portrayed through comedy, subjects such as religion, culture, conflict, peace, and LGBTQ+ identity are portrayed with sincerity.

4. The heartwarming portrayal of friendship

The main characters’ friendship is embedded throughout the story as the five of them stick together during all the dilemmas they face. Touching moments that highlight the friends’ heartwarming bond are scattered throughout the series, but are truly special because they aren’t overdone.

5. The realistic depiction of teenage life

Despite its unique setting, Derry Girls realistically portrays the ups and downs of teenage life in a way that resonates with a wide audience. In spite of the conflict in Northern Ireland, the teenage characters are equally worried about passing their exams, finding prom dates, and getting out of detention.
