Heartstopper Renewed for Seasons Two and Three
May 23, 2022
Following the show’s release to Netflix in April of 2022, Heartstopper has received more than 52 million views. The show, based on graphic novels written by Alice Oseman, explores the story of two teenage boys falling in love and navigating the difficulties that come with it. The show also includes several side plots that showcase transgender and queer teenagers, an essential form of representation. On May 20th, 2022, the show was announced to have been renewed for two more seasons. This was great news to the fans who admire the show’s inclusivity of many members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Little has been shared about the next season, but fans can expect it to continue to follow the plotline of the graphic novels. In an interview with NME, Kit Connor, who plays a main character, Nick Nelson, explored what he thinks could be coming in later seasons.
“For Nick, I think there’s a lot more exploration to be done in terms of his family. It’s known to fans of the comics that he has an older brother who’s homophobic. I think that would be a really interesting route to go down, but I think there’s loads of material to go and explore.”
The show and novels have gained popularity for their inclusive cast and representation of LGBTQ+ youth in the U.K. In an interview with Buzzfeed, author, Alice Oseman spoke on the novel’s reflection on growing up queer.
“I think here in the UK, the teenage experience of being queer in school can really vary. I think some teens have a much better experience than the characters in Heartstopper, whereas others might really be able to relate to what Charlie has gone through, for example.”
