Book club just wrapped up their January meeting on Tuesday the 14th by talking about three books surrounding the theme “Epic”. With great conversation and snacks, the members enjoyed a successful meeting in the English collab space. The books covered at the meeting were The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston, A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes, and One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig. After reading all three, I have formed a developed opinion on each.
The Seven Year Slip was a rom-com book with a sci-fi twist; a time traveling apartment. As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of a cheesy romance book (but can still appreciate the genre), I found that the addition of time travel was the perfect choice. The main character Clementine navigates grief, career changes, and romance in a very relatable and likeable perspective.
A Thousand Ships was a Greek mythology book focused on the women of the Trojan War. With shifting perspectives, this book kept me entertained and hooked onto each of the personalities included. Additionally, I found the book to be very informative about the history behind each woman if you don’t know the myths of the Trojan War.
One Dark Window was the first fantasy book of a duology series. With a very interesting magic system, this book keeps you hooked from the start. I found this book to be an engaging and unique addition to the fantasy genre due to the word building. The magic is built upon a deck of cards that plays on the ideas of a tarot system. As a fantasy lover, I really enjoyed many of the characteristics of this book.
Overall there were some great picks this month and I would recommend each one regardless of if you are in the club or not. Next meeting holds some great picks as well with a theme of “connection”. The books we are reading are These Precious Days by Ann Patchet, Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren, and Everything Everything by Nicola Noon.
