Last Monday, Tyler, the Creator dropped his eighth studio album, featuring 14 new songs. After listening to the entire album several times, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite songs from Chromakopia:
- “St. Chroma”: This first song on the album debuted on Tyler’s Instagram post and a snippet of the song was released to the public before the actual album was dropped. Given that I am a huge fan of Tyler and his music, the first listen to this song was very special and it was everything I was hoping for. The beginning of the song features Tyler’s mom, who is also featured in the beginning of several other songs in this new album. This song features elements of Tyler’s rap and lyrical talent. Additionally, renowned artist Daniel Caesar is featured in the vocals of this song.
- “Noid”: This was the first song to be officially released as a single a few days before the album itself was dropped. This song is among my favorites on the album. It is a bit hectic and disorganized at times, but I think it perfectly reflects Tyler’s paranoia. My favorite part about this song were the guitar chords that kept the beat, which were done by WILLOW.
- “Darling, I”: This song is more upbeat and optimistic than the other songs on his album, and it is probably my favorite. Instead of rap verses, Tyler is singing throughout the majority of the song, and I think his vocals are very impressive. This song is about Tyler falling in love and his fear of commitment. It explores the complex relationship between his desire to explore love while also not wanting to be tied down or overwhelmed. “Darling, I” features Teezo Touchdown, who was featured in his previous album, Call Me If You Get Lost, in the song “RUN IT UP”. Teezo Touchdown also opened during Tyler’s tour shows in 2021. His unique voice and rhythmic style add to the appeal of this song.
- “Hey Jane”: This song reminds me a bit of his CMIYGL song “Wilshire”, in the sense that he is telling a story through his lyrics. I love this “Hey Jane” because it paints a scene within a song. The vocals are relaxed but I believe the bars blend well. It is about Tyler getting a London woman pregnant and how they will continue with this unexpected situation. It made me appreciate Tyler more considering how he went about the situation in the song.
- “Sticky”: This track, featuring Glorilla, Sexyy Red, and Lil Wayne is already a fan favorite. The song reminds me of a cheer chant with its beat and lyrics. The beat drop into Glorilla’s verse, which I think is the best feature in the entire album, is very fun to listen to. Some argue this is the best track on the entire album. It is definitely a great song to dance to, and some creators on TikTok have already created dances.
- “Thought I Was Dead”: This song is similar to “Sticky” with its incredible beat and instrumentals. The overall theme and chorus of the song weren’t my favorite, but I still really enjoyed the song because of its rhythm. This song features ScHoolboy Q and Santigold.
- Like Him: This song is about Tyler’s relationship with his absent father. Several albums ago in Wolf, Tyler sang about his father in his song “Answer”, and many relate the two songs with their similar themes. He is singing about how he doesn’t know how to miss his father, considering he was never in the picture in the first place, yet a lingering feeling is always wondering about him. It touches on his mother’s guilt of not letting him meet his father. I think this was a vulnerable song and I am grateful that he chose to share it with his fans.
