New years come and go in Liberty High School, but as a new year comes to a start Liberty is always welcomed with a few new teachers. Besides the new assistant principals, the three new staff are Mr. Porter, Mr. Yoder, and Mrs. Cash.
Mr. Porter who is a new teacher that teaches Economics and World History. He previously taught AP European History. AP World History, AP Government, World religions, and Sociology at Olentangy Berlin.
“I really love the department here. All the teachers are great, really supporting administration. I’m excited to coach wrestling this year, that’s going to be a new chapter and something that’s going to be really enjoyable to know the kids and community more,” Mr. Porter said.
This is Porter’s 8th year teaching. He’s taught many classes in Olentangy Berlin, but with no AP classes this year, he appreciates and enjoys the classes he teaches now as he likes a little break from teaching all the AP courses.
“A few reasons why I decided to come to Liberty is because I was looking for a change in my career. Teaching different classes that what I’ve taught,” Mr. Porter said.
The second new teacher this year is Mr. Yoder, who teaches visual arts. This year is Mr. Yoder’s official first year teaching and before he would do freelance video work, shoots for weddings, commercial photography, and etc.
“The thing I love most about Liberty is the support from all of the teachers. I do really feel like I am part of a team, especially inside of my department. I decided to come to Liberty because their art program. I would argue that Liberty is probably one of the best in the state, if not the best. We just have such a variety of art that you can take here,” Mr. Yoder said.
Mr. Yoder is very excited this year to see all the different types of art the students will create. The very last new teacher in the OLHS building is welcomed in the Foreign Language department teaching Spanish. Mrs. Cash has been teaching for 12 years. She came from Pickerington, Ridgeview Junior High School.
“I like a lot of things about Liberty. First of all, I like being in high school, I have great students and I like just the feeling of the bigger picture. I am excited to rise to the standards that Olentangy has for their students and help you guys achieve everything you need to,” Mrs. Cash said.
Her goals for this year are primarily to make all her students feel confident in moving onto Spanish two, and then three, and so on. Mrs. Cash wants all her students to feel ready as they progress to high levels of learning in Spanish while also enjoying the learning aspect.
“I was stuck at Junior high for a long time, and as my personal goals went forward, I got married, had kids, and then professionally I needed to figure out what I wanted for myself. A big thing was being in a high school, a really good school district. So I went to Olentangy when that opportunity arrived,” Mrs. Cash said.
