As the 24-25 Liberty year comes to a start, the OLHS staff presents us with an extraordinary surprise. “The Daily Grind” is a coffee shop that the staff have been planning and developing for for a while. Mrs. Ebersole, a teacher here at Liberty helps to run the shop along with any students that are interested in volunteering.
“Students who help out here get volunteer hours that they can use to sign up for NHS, or the seals for your diploma,” Mrs. Ebersole said.
The shop is located in the cafeteria near the Theater and is open from periods 1-3, and 11-12. The staff has made it clear that they are not open during any lunch periods.
“We’re trying to promote more inclusion within the school, so we’re having some regular peer mentors work with some of our students. The first week has just been a learning experience for all of us, but after that everybody kind of has assigned jobs,” Mrs. Ebersole said.
There are many different types of roles that are available for students to participate in helping out with the Daily Grind. Some include working on the cash register, taking orders, filling those orders, making drinks, cleaning, taking inventory, stocking, and more! Seeing this new change in OLHS, a few of the old OLHS students that are now staff in the building are very open to this new change in OLHS that wasn’t here before.
“We were only allowed to have water bottles when I was a student, and I remember we weren’t allowed to use the vending machines. The musket only had Gatorade, I think it’s really important just to have a lot of choice and autonomy, with a lot of young adults making decisions about when we are snacking and drinking things,” Mrs. Rust said.
The Daily Grind also consists of a menu specifically for students and another menu specifically for the staff. The Daily Grind has many beverages to offer, Mrs. Ebersole’s personal favorite and recommendation would be the caramel frappuccino. So if you’re ever thirsty or just need a little bit of fun during your school day, checking up on the Daily Grind is always open for all OLHS staff and students!
“Just take a little break and get something you know? My overall goal is to make Liberty a little more inclusive,” Mrs. Ebersole said.
