Taylor Swift’s Newly Released Songs Review

Written by: Kate Macaulay, Intro to Journalism Writer

Taylor Swift has recently released 4 old unreleased songs due to the fans’ requests. One of the songs is from the Fearless album, one from Lover, and the two others are from Red. Taylor had released these as a celebration of the Eras Tour starting. The Eras Tour is the current Taylor Swift tour where she sings songs from each of her albums. She currently only has U.S. locations dropped for the tour but promised international dates. This will be a review of each of the songs so you, as the reader, can maybe find a new song to listen to.

Beginning with the most popular song, All of the Girls You Loved Before. I’m guessing that this was the most popular song because of the hype that came once a snippet of the song was released on TikTok. Fans, including me, love this song because it is peaceful. The song has a feminist aspect because of how she describes each past “ex” and women figures in the life of her new boyfriend had an effect on who he, her boyfriend, is today. The lyrics, “Your mother brought you up loyal and kind, Teenage love taught you there’s good in goodbye, Every woman that you knew brought you here, I wanna teach you how forever feels, Like the girls you loved before (ooh)” embody how she isn’t being “petty” when it comes to the idea of her boyfriend loving and appreciating other woman in his life, it makes him admirable and the good person that he is. This song also has a happy, upbeat tone that makes me smile for the whole 3 minutes and 41 seconds that it is.

My personal favorite out of these releases is, If This Was a Movie. This song illustrates the feeling of the effect of being someone who tends to romanticize things in their favor. For example, this song focuses on waiting on a past relationship to resurface, specifically 6 months of waiting. She is recalling the events of their relationship and remembering the things that he had said to her. She realizes that in the movies that she sees, usually the couple gets over this “hiccup” and will get back together, but they haven’t. I think this is so relatable because relationships look so easy in the typical rom-com movies that it almost creates a false hope for some people when they just need to move on. The lyrics, “Come back, come back, come back to me like, You could, you could if you just said you’re sorry. I know that we could work it out somehow, But if this was a movie you’d be here by now” really resonates with the idea that you can’t just expect a happy ending and not put in the work for it.

Now, Safe and Sound, which was one of the songs featured in The Hunger Games. This song reminds me of an older sibling or parent that is confronting their younger sibling or child. The person in the song is trying to reassure a person that they will be safe in this world. The lyrics, “Don’t you dare look out your window Darling, everything’s on fire. The war outside our door keeps raging on. Hold on to this lullaby. Even when (the) music’s gone. Gone” exemplifies the person trying to protect the others’ innocence and keep their hope, even through this “war”. This song is perfect for The Hunger Games because the main character, Katniss, takes on the role of a protective older sister, to her sister Prim, and protective of her partner in the games, Peeta. I don’t really relate to this song but I think the lyrics are really well written and were perfect for the movie.

Lastly, the other song featured in The Hunger Games movie, Eyes Open. My favorite part of this song is these lyrics, “Everybody’s waiting for you to break down, Everybody’s watching to see the fallout, Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping, Keep your eyes open” because I see them as if everyone around you is “preying on your downfall” or it can be used as a reference for situations where you are in a conflict and everyone wants to see you break down for their own pleasure. Another song that is perfect for The Hunger Games because in this world, they make a show out of kids fighting to survive, and promote it as entertainment.

None of these songs are skips and each song has a particular depth that makes them unique. Which means this is yet another successful Taylor Swift drop, she never fails. My final ranking from least to most liked would be Safe and Sound, Eyes Open, All the Girls You Loved Before, and then If This Was A Movie.
