Multiple Records Broken At The 65th Annual Grammys
February 6, 2023
The 65th annual Grammys brought multiple memorable moments, from a tribute to 50 years of Hip Hop to Beyoncé breaking the record for most Grammys won in the history of the awards show.
Starting off strong even before the awards began, Taylor Swift was awarded best Music Video for All Too Well: The Short Film, which broke records when it was released. Viola Davis also was awarded a Grammy for the audiobook of her memoir, “Finding Me,” which earned her EGOT status.
The red carpet followed the opening ceremony, which showcased the fashion of the attendees. Some of the best dressed guests were Steve Lacy, H.E.R, Taylor Swift, Lizzo, Harry Styles and Beyoncé.
The ceremony started off with Bad Bunny opening the show with a medley of his songs “El Apagon” and “Después De La Playa”. The energy Bad Bunny created was unmatched and it got most people up on their feet dancing. It was a fun start to the show, one of the better openers in the past few years.
Beyoncé achieved a major milestone last night, winning the most grammys in the history of the awards show. However she was not there to accept her first award of the show as she wasn’t even at the venue yet. She was there to accept her record breaking win for Best Dance/Electronic Album with her album Renaissance. Many other artists paid tribute to Beyoncé’s amazing feat during their own speeches including Lizzo’s speech for Record of the Year with About Damn Time, saying “You changed my life. You sang that gospel medley and the way you make me feel, I was like I want to make people feel this way with my music.”
There were many other emotional speeches including Harry Styles after he won Album of the Year for Harry’s House. Reina, a huge fan of Harry, was able to attend the show along with other fans of each Album of the Year nominee, just before Trevor Noah announced the winner of the coveted award he called the fans onto the stage and handed the card to Reina who was able to announce that Harry had won. It was a very special moment, with Harry in shock. Once he gathered himself, he ran onto the stage to give Reina a big hug and accept his award.
Another history-making win was for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, won by Sam Smith and Kim Petras for their song Unholy. Kim is the first transgender woman to win the award. Sam stepped back and let Kim give the speech so she could celebrate the moment.
One of the better moments in the show was the tribute to 50 years of Hip Hop with a stacked list of performers from Grandmaster Flash to Missy Elliott. It was amazing to be able to see all of these artists come together to celebrate Hip Hop 50 years after it was popularized. The other tribute to those who passed in the last year was a tear jerking celebration of life honoring artists like Olivia Newton-John, Takeoff, Christine McVie and Loretta Lynn.
The 65th Annual Grammys was a celebration of music with multiple history making wins, records broken and amazing tributes to the greats that came before today’s artists.
