The Olentangy Liberty High School varsity baseball team proved that some victories mean more than the numbers on the scoreboard. On Saturday, May 9, the Patriots hosted their annual Strike Out ALS Challenge game, shutting out crosstown rival Olentangy High School 10-0. While the offense dominated the diamond, the real triumph belonged to the community fundraising efforts taking place behind the backstop.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It destroys a person’s ability to walk, talk, and breathe. Because the disease currently has no cure, the Patriots partnered with local advocacy groups to turn every strikeout into an opportunity for medical research.

Before and during the matchup, fans from both Powell and Lewis Center packed the stands. Attendees purchased $10 commemorative cardboard baseballs to honor those affected by the illness. Each donor wrote a personal message or a loved one’s name on a ball, creating a massive visual wall of support displayed across the main ballpark fencing. The event also featured a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and custom team merchandise sales, with all proceeds directly benefiting patient care.

Once the first pitch crossed the plate, Liberty took complete control of the rivalry matchup. The Patriots used aggressive base running, disciplined plate appearances, and clutch hitting to jump out to a five run lead in the first two innings. Liberty’s starting pitcher kept the Braves hitters off-balance all afternoon, mixing a fast fastball with sharp breaking balls to surrender zero runs and secure the definitive 10-0 shutout.

The victory moved the Patriots to an impressive 20-2 overall record, keeping them firmly at the top of the Ohio Capital Conference standings as the postseason approaches.

Though the game ended early due to the high school run rule, the impact of the afternoon will remain with the community long after the final out of the spring season. Local organizers confirmed that the event raised thousands of dollars, ensuring that the matchup successfully raised both vital funds and community awareness.
