The Drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson was released last month on April 3rd. I cannot lie I was surprised a lot by this movie, I knew it would be good but I had no idea just how good. I warn you there will be spoilers in this.
The main characters Emma and Charlie are a soon to be married couple who are spending their wedding week doing things all couples do, going to work, taking photos, working on their dance, music and everything wedding related. However while they were at a tasting event with their close friends Rachel and Mike they decided they should all share their biggest secret. Rachel and Mike’s biggest secrets were just stupid stuff they did when they were teenagers and Charlie couldn’t even think of one, however Emma’s secret was much much much bigger.
I think like everyone else I went into this movie thinking it would be a cute love movie. In the trailer it looked super simple and relaxed, so I was expecting a cute rom-com. I kind of expected Emma’s “big secret” to be something little like “Oh I have a secret family member you’ve never met” or something like that when in reality it was a lot bit darker than that.
With the reveal of Emma’s big secret Rachel, Mike and Charlie all begin to look at her differently. Charlie begins to be paranoid living with her, thinking she is going to do something crazy, while Rachel responds angrily in a “How could you do that!” sort of way. Honestly I don’t remember what Mike’s response was but I think it was somewhere in the middle of Charlie and Rachel’s.
Emma on the other hand starts to become paranoid that now her closest friends know her biggest secret and are now viewing her differently. She and Charlie both begin to have some difficulty living and communicating together.
We see a lot of flashbacks during this part, as the “secret” was Emma confessing she almost committed a major crime when she was twelve. The movie did a really good job of showing how violence in the media can have an impact on young kids, as that’s where young Emma had gotten the idea from. The movie showed her looking at pictures and other media that was glamorizing violence, and how that shaped her views and gave her the idea. I really enjoyed that it was very clear what the writers and directors were trying to call out.
Charlie’s reaction to Emma’s secret also I think was very well done and interesting. He started to become more scared of Emma and eventually he became so stressed out about what to do he ended up cheating on her. I definitely do not support his actions in the slightest but it was very interesting to watch his character progress.
Rachel truly was the main villain in the movie. Emma’s secret was bad I agree, however it happened when she was twelve and she made it very clear she didn’t think about that since then and had completely switched her views on violence. Rachel spent Charlie and Emma’s wedding gossiping and eventually turned it into a total nightmare. I really really wanted to step into the movie and punch her, I truly despised her character.
Overall I really enjoyed the movie, I think the ending tied things together really well and I really had no idea where the plot was going. It was a lot more serious and deep than what I thought it would be and I liked that a lot. I love a good rom-com but also I do appreciate a deeper darker movie like this one. I’ve been enjoying a lot of the movies A24 has been putting out lately and I can’t wait to see what they plan to release in the future.
