Elena Aldrink ‘26 set a new school record in the girls’ 1600-meter run this week, finishing with a time of 4:52.87.
Aldrink broke the previous record during a regular season meet; the final time, 4:52.87, officially became the new mark for the program.
“I was extremely happy with breaking it because I had been wanting to make it faster for a while,” Aldrink said.
She said the performance meant more because of the work she had put in leading up to the season.
“I have been working really hard outside in the cold all winter, and it’s tough with the weather being so bad, so having some of the hard work pay off is reassuring,” she said.
The 1600-meter run requires athletes to maintain their pace well while finishing strong in the final stretch. Aldrink said the record also serves as a way to show her progress moving forward.
“It personally means a lot because I’m trying to show coaches at school and the college I’m going to how my fitness for the sport is going, so it’s helpful for them to know as well as myself what kind of times I can run,” Aldrink said.
Earlier this school year, Aldrink also won the state championship in the 5K during the cross country season.
Aldrink will continue competing this season as she finishes her senior year. After graduation, she plans to continue her track career at the University of Washington.
