On Sunday February first the 68th Annual Grammys were held in Los Angeles. Here are our thoughts on who won.

Max’s thoughts – 

Best New Artist –

I am really glad Olivia Dean won, I don’t really listen to her that much but from what I’ve heard her music is good. I also think she was the best option to win in this category, as I didn’t really like the other artists up for the award. Katseye definitely has the potential to be good, I really like their song “Gabriella”, but they definitely aren’t the best yet. I really enjoy their dancing and stage presence, but their lyrics are too simple and don’t always make sense. The same thing I think is true with Addison Rae. I’m a big fan of her music and she does a good job performing, however her vocals live are not the best in my opinion. I think just like Katseye she has potential, but she isn’t there yet. Alex Warren I’m not the biggest fan of his music either, it’s just not really my style, but I do like him as a person. Leon Thomas I honestly didn’t really know who he was, I’ve heard the song “Mutt” but that’s about it. The Marias I really like and they were my second choice to win. I haven’t listened to a lot of their music but I really like what I’ve heard so far. Sombr is probably the one I have the most opinions about, I don’t like him. I think his music is boring and basic, I don’t really like his vocals or performances and honestly something about him just kicks me out. 

Song of the Year 

Honestly I love Wildflower by Billie Ellish but I don’t like how a song from 2024 won at the 2025 Grammys. I understand how it was re-released as a single during the eligibility period for the 2025 Grammys and it is technically fair however I still wish a song actually released during 2025 won. Honestly I was hoping for Manchild to win, I’m not really the biggest fan of the other songs. 

I think Sabrina Carpenter should’ve won at least something for “Man’s Best Friend” this year, it was a really great album and honestly I liked it more than “Short n’ Sweet” which won two Grammys at last year’s event. 

Album of the Year

I was really happy Bad Bunny won for DeBÍ TiRAR Más FOToS. I’m not a massive listener of his due to the fact his music is all in Spanish, but I really like a few parts of some of his songs, and from what I’ve heard the album was good. I honestly was rooting for Man’s Best Friend to win, but I’m just as happy with Bad Bunny winning.

Record of the Year

I honestly am still really confused about the difference between song of the year and record of the year but I’m okay with who won. Honestly I was really hoping for “Manchild” to win because I really like that song but I’m okay with “Luther” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA winning. I knew it wasn’t going to win but I was kind of hoping “The Subway” by Chappell Roan would win as well, as I really like that song. 

Those are the four main categories I paid attention to during the show, but I also really liked the performances they put on this year. In recent years the Grammys have started to include less awards in the show that’s broadcasted on tv and instead focus more on performances, which I do enjoy watching. Overall I thought the Grammys were good this year, even if I don’t agree with some of the winners, I am happy about Best New Artist.

Mack’s Thoughts

Best New Artist –

So here’s the thing, I have no clue who Olivia Dean is. Frankly, I am the least qualified person for this story but I need some more Patriot Press articles or I’m somehow going to fail the newspaper. I tuned in all those Sundays ago just like many of you but my honest opinion is Olivia Dean sounds like a genderbent Bublé. Easy listening music that recycles the standard love-song-smash-hit format. I mean how many times can history repeat itself? I would’ve liked to see Leon Thomas because he had the best performance I saw at the Grammy’s and I am a Victorious fan so it’s cool to see a Nickelodeon alum pull a 180° on their career. We should bring back Ke$ha, that’s all there is to it. And I may be a little pretentious, I listen to Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd but ultimately, Dean felt like a stronger entertainer than she did as a musician.

Song of the Year 

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Billie Eilish, I mean I do like a handful of her songs and the general consensus is that “Wildflower” shouldn’t have won because it’s a two year old song. Personally, I liked “Golden” and “APT.” as nominees. With a little brother at home, I have practically the whole K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack memorized. I think Lady Gaga fell off after her first few albums and is just being weird to be weird. There’s not much art to wearing a big spiky hat. I’m kind of shocked “The Subway” wasn’t nominated, I do quite like Roan and Carpenter but not a die hard fan by any means.

Album of the Year

Before the Grammy’s and the announcement that he would perform at the Super Bowl, I wasn’t really aware of Bad Bunny besides a Simpsons short he was in on Disney+. However, after watching the Super Bowl which I think he did a superb job of, I have started listening here and there and while I’m not super familiar with the album of his that won, I think he has potential. If you ask me, Tyler should’ve won for Chromakopia because that was such a well produced album and that sort of signature Tyler “funkiness” that bled through each lyric. I was still rooting for Leon Thomas so it was hard to see him lose. GNX was fine but Kendrick is so overhyped at this point it’s become hard to root for him.

Record of the Year

Back to my point about Kendrick, “luther” being put against mainly pop records after there were already so many nominations for Kendrick’s work seems like a punch in the face to other artists. Along with that, the mumble rap Kendrick built his diss empire on is slowly crumbling and pop is returning to the mainstream. Still standing by “The Subway” and “Manchild” as strong competitors and should’ve-been-winners.
