Most Fall sports are officially over, leading to Liberty’s numerous winter sports. Among them is diving. Despite a lack of recognition, the athletes are dedicated to the training, earning Liberty a name last year in the diving season. As the season goes on we will be covering the divers and making sure that people know and will stay updated with the sport.
Training for the athletes participating has been consistent pretty much all year round because they practice and compete with clubs out of the high school season. Sophomore diver Leo Ryan has found ways to make consistent training like this manageable while ensuring he does everything possible to be successful in the season.
“My goals for this season are to use it as an opportunity to improve my mindset during competition”, Ryan said.
While the team is small, they are very mighty. Leo Ryan, senior Kylie Moreland, and senior captain Abby Foskey are all very good divers who are dedicated to their craft. Foskey, who placed 9th at states last year and just committed to West Virginia University, is ready to make a deep state run this year along with Ryan.
“Another goal is to improve my finish at states last year at 32nd place”, Ryan said.
Although it can be hard to find the motivation for training in these months, athletes and coaches alike are confident their efforts will pay off this season.
Their first meet is on Friday December 5th at Ohio State. It is called the Ned Reeb invite and there is very good competition that will be there. The divers frequently practice at the sight, so this will feel like a home game to them. It is also only about a 20 minute drive, so come out and support the Patriots! The dive team will work hard to push past limits, support each other, and stay focused, determined, and disciplined to achieve success this season.
Sometimes, people overlook the divers and do not know much about the sport. Our hope is that by covering the sport we can make more people aware of the student athletes who work hard and compete well.
