I’m not sure if this is technically a movie, but I spent almost two hours watching it in theaters so I’d qualify it. I’m going to be really honest, I had no idea what to expect. I went to the Eras Tour movie when it was in theaters, but that was different because everyone knew it was a tour movie, this one all I knew is there would be a music video of some sorts.
I went pretty late on friday to see it and I was shocked how many kids there were still up. Our theater was pretty full and people definitely dressed up for it. A lot of the theater workers also had on Taylor Swift friendship bracelets which was so cute, and it reminded me of The Eras Tour.
The movie started showing the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” which she wrote and directed herself.
I really liked the music video, it had a lot of the showgirl theme in it, (the sparkles, bright colors) but also had scenes that looked more like she was in an older painting (renaissance kind of?) and one scene where she was on a pirate ship. Another detail I really liked was that she had a lot of the dancers from the Eras Tour in it, and the choreography was done by Mandy Moore, who also did the Eras Tour.
The costumes were so pretty as well. Like I said this music video had a lot of the showgirl theme to it, the signature orange glitter that was in a lot of the cover art was very present and I loved the blue sailor-like outfits they wore at one point. The showgirl outfits reminded me a lot of Moulin Rouge.
The attention to detail was really present and along with showing the music video during the show, she also showed the behind the scenes. One of my favorite parts was seeing her homemade sourdough bread make an appearance.
However my favorite part was the final scene, everyone was in relatively normal party-ish outfits and in a hotel room. Swift came down the hallway on a table followed by a lot of dancers. Overall it was just one big party and I really enjoyed that.
The other part of the movie is probably more relevant to the other story I wrote (which was mainly about the album itself), in which she explained the meaning behind every song. It reminded me a little bit of the Folklore long pond studio session that she released during covid along with her album ‘Folklore’ and it’s always really interesting to hear how she came up with some of the lyrics (and I like to compare my interpretation versus what she intended it to be)
After each explanation the lyric video for each song would play, which normally included a short clip from “The Fate of Ophelia” music video.
I really enjoyed the movie, like I mentioned before I always enjoy getting to see the behind the scenes of things and it definitely made me like the album even more. I really enjoy all the things she is doing with this album and I really hope we get to see more music videos written and directed by her in the future.
