The well known and rising pop star Tate Mcrae dropped her new album called So Close the What this past Friday the 21st. The whole album consisted of a total of 15 songs and a really nice mix between her usual style and moer slower songs. Personally I think she always has really catchy lyrics and an upbeat style which makes her music more interesting and fun to listen to. Mcrae is also going on tour soon around the US and the closest she’s coming is Clevland so make sure to get tickets soon.
Overall I wish she would’ve done more collabs with other artists as that could bring in more of a new genre than pop. I would also change around the order of her songs towards the end of the album. Overall I think So Close to What is a great album and she definitely can become a more well known artist. She did an amazing job of mixing up her usual genre as well with this being her third album. As a whole I would give this album a 9.5/10, these are all the songs separately and my ratings for them.
- Miss Possessive – 7/10
This wasn’t one of my favorites in the whole album, personally I just thought it was a little too slow for my liking. She started off with a different approach to it than she usually does and that was good.
- 2 Hands – 8.5/10
I really liked this song as it had more of her usual upbeat pop style which is something that I really enjoy. One of my favorite parts was where it slowly builds up to the chorus and the background beats in this are really great as well.
- Revolving Door – 7.5/10
This one is slower than the previous one but again has a really nice beat that makes it catchy to listen to. I really like the illusion effect they did with the music in this song because it adds to the overall vibe of the song with her singing.
- Bloodonmyhands (feat. FloMilli) – 8.8/10
This is definitely one of my favorites on this album, I really enjoyed how it was more fast paced and combined pop and rap really nicely. Her high notes on this song were just amazing and Flomilli did an amazing job collaborating on this song.
- Dear god – 8.5/10
The lyrics to this song are well thought out and I personally really like it, the beat builds up and goes down in a really nice way as well. This is a chill song to listen to and I like how towards the second half of the song the feel of the song changes from previously before.
- Purple lace bra – 9.5/10
This one starts off with a more classical starting and that’s something I really like and changes it up from her usual style. This song reminded of Diet Pepsi by Addison with the whispering singing and building up to the chorus, and I really enjoyed it.
- Sports car – 10/10
This one of her teased songs before the whole album and I really liked it from the start. There are really catchy in this song specifically and I also loved the stronger beat and rhythm throughout the song.
- Signs – 9.2/10
This was pretty similar to her other pop songs and I’m here for it. I really enjoyed the burst of lots of different background songs during the chorus, and it was also of course really catchy to listen to.
- I know love (feat. The Kid Laroi) – 8/10
This was a great collab with her current boyfriend about how they got together and a good change compared to the others. Personally I think it really combined both of their styles of music really well with a great chorus as well.
- Like I do – 9.8/10
I really like the background beat in this, more fast like a rap song, with a slower lyrics and certain parts that went faster. Good changed compared to the other songs in her album and provided a good change. Changes half way through the song with voices and thats a good change.
- It’s ok I’m ok – 9/10
This is another one of her songs that got released before her whole album dropped and it’s definitely one of my favorites. This is similar to Sports car and Revolving door with more of a pop style to the song.
- No I’m not in love – 8/10
This actually contrasts her song with The Kid Laroi a little bit, and in general it wasn’t one of my favorites. I wasn’t a big fan of the background sounds and beat in this particular song as the background took away from the main part.
- Means I care – 9.5/10
I really liked different starting beat and the background in this, and is definitely one of my top favorites. Personally connected to this particular song and I really enjoyed how it had a different feel than her usual music.
- Greenlight – 9/10
This was more slower but not too slow because of the background beat and definitely makes you move back and forth. I personally didn’t like this song too much as it had more of a country feel to it and I’m not as big of a fan of that.
- Nostalgia – 8.2/10
This also had more of a country feel to it similar to the previous song, I think this is a great song to end the album to. It talks more about her personal life and I really liked the guitar strumming in the background.
