With all the hype surrounding the Wicked movie, this past weekend I decided to go see it for myself and I can say it exceeded my expectations. Especially including the music, visuals, and acting, all around I truly enjoyed the movie and could see myself watching it again just for Jonathan Bailey.
Prior to watching the movie I wasn’t sure if the casting of Ariana Grande for Galinda was the best decision. Worried that I wouldn’t be able see past her house-hold name and understand her character to the fullest of my abilities. However, after watching the movie I am extremely amazed by her performance. She perfectly fits the character of Galinda with her relatively smooth voice and after all the negative feedback surrounding her sudden “shape shifting” blonde hair, I can now say I fully understand her decision and believe it was a key factor in detaching her self from the award winning singer she is known to be and embody the original broadway Galinda from 2003.
Overall the music was very enjoyable. Although I believe that Cynthia Erivo voice didn’t fully match the character of the wicked witch I did enjoy her singing and would listen to her in my own time. The music throughout the film never came off as “awkward” or “cringy” and I understand why it has been such a hit.
Most of all I loved the visuals and creative decisions throughout the film. Ranging from backdrops, costume designs, and the overall story line I loved every part of it. With Grande’s and Erivo’s characters sticking out apart from fellow classmates with their personalized pink and black uniforms. While also their shared suite and school grounds seemed so amazing I wish I could join them.
I 100% recommend going to watch this movie and can’t wait for it to be available on streaming services
