On August 23rd, Sabrina Carpenter released her second studio album Short n‘ Sweet. The album had eleven songs, including two previously released songs, “Please, Please Please” and “Espresso”.
The album opens with the lyrics from her song “Taste”, “Oh, I leave quite an impression”, giving us an insight into what we can expect from the album because she certainly left a strong impression. All the songs give off a flirty energy with lyrics like “Boy, it’s not that complicated, you should stay in my good graces” and “Who’s the cute boy with the white jacket and the cute accent”.
The album title, “Short n’ Sweet” also contributes to the flirty vibe the album has, perhaps a reference to how her relationships are short n’ sweet or a reference to her, as Carpenter is only 5 feet tall and very sweet.
Short n’ Sweet also had a music video for the song “Taste” that featured Jenna Ortega and paid tribute to the movie “Death Becomes Her”. The video leaned on the violent side, so I would not recommend for viewers that aren’t fans of gore.
Another movie reference in the album happens in the song titled “Juno”. Carpenter says “…I might let you make me Juno” referencing the 2007 film that focuses on a pregnant teenager named Juno.
In a change from the mostly upbeat pop songs of the beginning of the album, Carpenter slows it down a bit as the album progresses with songs like “Don’t Smile” and “Lie to Girls” creating a good blend that I think every album should have.
Short n’ Sweet, without a doubt, was another great album from Carpenter. The only thing I would say critique-wise is I wish it would’ve come out in summer, as the songs are all perfect for a pool day. Other than that I think Carpenter did a fantastic job and this album will be on repeat for the next month.
