Every year to welcome new members, the National Honors Society holds an induction ceremony at the end of November. It is a way to commemorate the achievements of its incoming members and give their families the chance to see them walk across a stage and be handed a certificate for their success.
Each name is called in alphabetical order and after being handed their certificate each inductee gets to shake Principal Michael Starner’s hand to receive congratulations.
The dress code this year was formal, as usual, and the students were dressed impressively. The “NHS Royalty”, Principal Starner called it, was dressed up as well and each gave a portion of the speech highlighting the pillars of NHS, Character, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service after Starner himself spoke. They consisted of President Kelsey Evans, Vice President Neena Naikar, Secretaries Mason Miller and Hannah Yacob, and Service Officer Sophie Doenges. President Evans was happy to be involved in the ceremony.
“I loved being a part of the NHS ceremony because it was so nice to see all the new members and congratulate them on their induction,” Evans said.
Both Juniors and Seniors were inducted this past Tuesday. In order to join NHS, you must submit the necessary volunteer hours (according to grade) detailed on the NHS schoology page at the beginning of the school year. You must also provide recommendations from your chosen three adults who can speak on your commitment to the NHS pillars. Inductees were excited to see their application come to fruition.
“I enjoyed being able to see my accomplishments as well as other people’s come together in one ceremony which highlighted the strong academics at our school.” Margaret Brown ‘25 said.
New inductees are advised to look out for future service opportunities like the Food and Toy drive coming up this December. They are also recommended to continue to collect volunteer hours and Juniors, if interested in joining the “NHS Royalty” make sure to apply for the position to be voted in by your peers at the end of this school year.
