The Olentangy Liberty Orchestra held its first concert last Friday, October 13th. The name of this concert was Salute to Spooky.
“The concert was about Halloween and was trying to convey a spooky mood overall,” said Maddy Hall ‘24, a violinist for the orchestra. “It was also our first concert of the year, so it was meant to be an introduction for the year.”
“Mr Bixler (the orchestra teacher) wanted to have an earlier concert than usual, and also wanted us to have a Halloween theme, which we haven’t done before,” said Hall.
They performed nine songs, one of them a solo from Jacob Myers ‘24. The nine songs included; The Haunted Carousel, Garyoyles, A Little Mischief Music, Creatures, The Ghost of John, In the Hall of the Mountain King, ‘Waltz’ from Masquerade Suite, Ghosts of Brandenburg, and for the finale, Thriller.
Assistant principal Mr. Schafer had a spotlight during the song Thriller.
“Everyone was shocked, but it was cool for him and the other teachers to play instruments,” said Hall.
Hall played in songs Ghost of John and In the Hall of the Mountain King.
“They were both spooky and fitting for the Halloween season,” said Hall.
To have an earlier concert means less time to prepare, but the group stuck through it.
“We would play on the stage during class to focus on trouble spots in the music and practice the special technology and lights. There were a few technical difficulties during the preparation, but by the time of the concert everything was good,” said Hall.
To end the show, they performed Thriller, a classic Halloween song by Michael Jackson.
“It was my favorite part of the play. It was super cool and the song sounded great,” said Hall.
