Five things to do during winter break

Written by: Sadie Mittendorf, Staff Writer

As winter break approaches, it’s time to think of what you’ll want to do when you inevitably get bored after a few days. Here’s some ideas for things you can do over winter break that are both fun and festive:

See holiday lights

Whether it be the Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo or drive through light shows like Butch Bando’s Fantasy of Lights drive, there’s plenty of opportunities to see entertaining light shows in Ohio. If you would prefer to stay out of the cold, drive through light shows are a relaxing way to see festive lights without even having to get out of the car.

Make food

Winter break is the perfect time to make food. Making gingerbread houses, cookies, or hot chocolate gives you both a fun activity to combat boredom and a delicious treat afterwards.

Watch holiday movies

Watching holiday movies is a great, festive way to spend time over winter break. If you really want to get into the holiday spirit, movies like “Elf”, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, or “Home Alone” are great options. While unconventional, movies like “Little Women” and “Edward Scissorhands” are also nice to watch during the holidays.

Do things you normally wouldn’t have time for

While resting is the main thing that comes to mind at the beginning of winter break, it’s also the perfect time to do things you normally wouldn’t have time for. Whether it be playing a game with family or friends, or simply watching a show you’ve been meaning to watch, winter break will give you more opportunities to commit to the fun plans you usually have to push aside.

Give back

The holiday season is the perfect time to give back to your community. Especially during winter break, you may have time to volunteer at places such as food banks or animal shelters. Even if you don’t have the opportunity to volunteer, donating to charities is always a great way to help those in need.
