Last May, I wrote an article featuring four books by Asian American authors celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It’s that time of year again, so here are three more books I’d recommend if you’re looking for some books to read by Asian American authors.
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Okay, okay, I know. This is already kind of cheating, since Mistry is actually an Indian-Canadian author. But this book is way too good to pass up. My review of it was my very first article on The Patriot Press, which you can look at here: A Fine Balance and Me. Safe to say, I love this book, and you should absolutely give it a read.
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
This book does feature some aspects that might not be suitable for everyone, so keep that in mind (content warning)! That being said, it’s so refreshing to see a setting inspired by China rather than the ubiquitous vaguely Medieval ones of so many other fantasy novels. The entire trilogy is pretty neat as well.
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
Yes, I realize this is a children’s novel. In fact, it was one of my favorite books when I was in elementary school. Shockingly though, it holds up pretty well. I reread it recently and found myself enjoying it thoroughly. I know I just bashed “typical” fantasy tropes with the last paragraph, but this novel is just a quintessential comfort book for me. Rereading brought me a wonderful blend of nostalgia and happiness, and I hope it does that for you, too.
