Ultimate Frisbee is an up and coming sport in liberty. Olentangy has their very own Ultimate Frisbee team that accepts students from any high school in the district.
The game is like football and soccer but with a frisbee. The goal is to catch a frisbee in the end zone, but when you’re holding the frisbee you cannot move, so you have to depend on your team to get the frisbee there.
“I can best describe playing Ultimate Frisbee as a mixture of football, soccer, and basketball, all while throwing a disc.” said Mrs. Dejong, a teacher at Liberty and one of the coaches of the Ultimate Frisbee team.
There are two main positions: cutters and handlers. Cutters are like the receivers on a football team and the handlers are like the quarterbacks. Ultimate Frisbee may appear to be an easy sport but it requires just as much energy as soccer or football.
“The game involves a lot of sprinting and changing directions, as well as well-timed cuts and well-placed throws to advance the disc up the field”, said Dejong
Olentangy’s team is called The Spinners and it combines students from grades nine-twelve throughout Orange, Olentangy, Berlin, Liberty and sometimes even homeschooled kids.
“I began playing Ultimate Frisbee myself in college, where I had always been on the outskirts of the Ultimate Frisbee community.” said Dejong, “I fell in love with Ultimate because of the community it comes with of kind and supportive athletes.”
As mentioned before, The Spinners have students from multiple schools on their team. There is one Liberty student on the team, Tyler Kanable.
“I started playing in 8th grade, after I got sick of soccer” said Kanable 26’
Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that combines athletic ability along with the skill of throwing a frisbee.
“My favorite part is that it lets me be active and get outside without being extremely toxic and over competitive” Kanable 26’ says.
