There are many subjects in school students have to learn. The main four core subjects in high school are: English, history, science, and math. Out of these four subjects, history is the most important to learn.
For one, it’s extremely important and useful for our modern world. Many wonder why certain things are happening or are shocked when certain events happen. Along with that, knowing the history and story behind certain events can allow us to be more aware of our world. In an age full of misinformation and people trying to manipulate the public it is vital that people know why certain things happen. An article by the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin expresses this point expertly stating “History gives us the tools to analyze and explain problems in the past, it positions us to see patterns that might otherwise be invisible in the present – thus providing a crucial perspective for understanding (and solving!) current and future problems.”
Another major reason why history is important to learn is learning other cultures. An article by the blog website Superprof states that learning culture in history is “one of the valuable subjects that helps us understand those who are different from us. Global, national, and local history develops cultural awareness by determining how different races and cultures affect one another. It encourages people to appreciate multi-cultural influences regardless of their own cultural background.” This also connects to the last point, understanding different cultures and how they interact with each other allow us to understand why they may work together or be in conflict with one another. Learning culture in history also allows us to delve into cultures we may have never had the chance to fully explore and understand.
Finally the other great thing about history is that it’s fun to piece together what happened. In other subjects it can be very tedious to get the answer you want but with history it’s like a puzzle you need to put together. Another quote from The Department of History from The University of Wisconsin says this point expertly stating that history is like “ assembling a set of clues through documents, artifacts, or other sources, and then piecing those clues together to tell a story that answers your question and tells you something unexpected about a different time and place.”
There are many more reasons why history is important and fun to learn, but these are the main reasons why history is so important and the best subject to learn while in school.
