On April 14, 2025 the first all female Blue Origin Crew, took off from Earth, fell into global orbit for 11 minutes, and safely landed back on Earth. The crew that boarded the New Shepard 31 and flew through Texas consisted of pop star Katy Perry, Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sanchez, CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, former Nasa rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
This crew is the first all female crew since 1963. The last all-female crew to fly into space was when Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel into space by herself on the spacecraft Vostok 6. Since then, there have been no other all-female spaceflights.
Katy Perry was seen taking a daisy to space leaving many fans asking why. The reason behind taking this flower along for the ride was to be symbolic for her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. She told many reporters she wants to show her daughter that the sky’s the limit and she can do whatever she sets her mind to. When Perry exited the aircraft she held the daisy up in the air and then kissed the ground.
Perry was not the only one to bring a sentimental symbol along for the ride. While fully in orbit Aisha Bowe raised a Brazilian flag saying how she is proud to be named the first brazilian woman in space.
In a recap interview, Lauren Sanchez said that seeing the world from a different perspective humbled her and motivated her to come home and make a greater effort in protecting the planet.
Amanda Nguyen and Gayle King mentioned that the trip made them feel unstoppable, as though they can do anything they dream of. While Kerianne Flynn and Gayle King also mention that the experience itself was nothing but peaceful as well as eye opening.
These women will forever hold a place in history making us one step closer to higher space capabilities. No one knows what the future holds but this experience definitely provides hope and optimism for the future and what lies ahead to these out of this world opportunities.
