With a standout performance at sectionals, Celeste Newton bowled her way to victory in the 1v1 match, securing a spot at districts for not just herself, but her entire team.
Girls bowling team tied for 16th place in sectionals and only the top 16 were allowed to go to districts. To make it to districts, Celeste Newton ’26 faces a 1v1 with a girl from Big Walnut high school.
“My favorite part was winning the 1v1, which means I got to take my girls team to districts and not go alone,”Newton ’26 said.
As the girls bowling team gears up for districts, they also have their sights set on the future. Newton also explains the process and procedure of being a part of the bowling team.
“There are no tryouts—everyone makes it—but we are actually looking for more people because we don’t have enough for next year. So we’re looking to recruit actually,” Newton ’26 said. “It’s also an easy way to get a varsity letter for both girls and boys and get gym credit as well.”
Bowling, often underestimated as a competitive sport, requires practice and consistency. Newton emphasized that while it can have its challenges, it’s also a sport that can be picked up with dedication.
“Bowling isn’t hard. With some consistency and practice, you can easily get pretty good at it. And it’s fun,” she said.
The team practices twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, giving members a structured yet manageable schedule to improve their skills and bond as a group.
“In bowling, you have good days and bad days, and the bad days are the most frustrating part since you know you can do better,” Newton ’26 said.
Beyond the competition, Newton says the team dynamic is what makes the sport truly enjoyable. The sense of community is strong, with teammates supporting one another and coaches fostering a welcoming atmosphere.
“The community is great. The girls have a great coach. The girls are really nice, welcoming, friendly, and silly; we are always joking around. The boys are nice too, very silly, but most are graduating so they won’t be there next year,” she said.
As the team heads into districts, Newton and her teammates remain focused on their goals while also hoping to spread the word about their team. For those looking to join a supportive team, have fun, and maybe even earn a varsity letter, girls bowling might be the perfect opportunity.
