The 97th annual Oscar awards took place on March second in Los Angeles California which honored movies released in 2024. Personally, I have a lot of thoughts on the winners.
One of my biggest issues with not just the Oscars but all the other award shows this year is the lack of appreciation for Wicked. The movie was incredibly made, they sang one of the hardest songs in the movie live on set, and while Cynthia Erivo was flying around in the air!!! Yet they lose a movie that used AI for their lyrics and vocals? How does that make sense?
I have so many opinions on Emilia Perez, I thought that movie was terrible. It was so awful I couldn’t even finish it all the way. It just felt so robotic…and off putting.
Zoe Saldaña is an amazing actress, but the amount of awards she won for this terrible movie is crazy. There are so many other parts she’s done that are so much better than this, where’s the recognition for that?
Also the director’s speech accepting ‘Best Original Song’ where they broke out into song…why would you do that….like what possessed you to do that…I was not a fan.
Despite some flaws, I am happy ‘Wicked’ won at least two grammys, one for best costume design and one for best production design. Everyone who worked on ‘Wicked’ did an incredible job, the costumes and set are so detailed, you can really tell they care about what they’re doing. However the actors deserved to win at least something.
Anora also won numerous big awards at the show, the lead actress Mikey Madison won Best Actress and the movie itself won Best Picture along with three others. I haven’t seen it personally but I don’t have any hate for it, it seems like a good movie, just not my kind of thing.
Still I have many complaints about the awards, not just about ‘Wicked’ being snubbed and ‘Emilia Perez’ somehow winning. My biggest one is, why didn’t ‘A Complete Unknown’ win anything?
I am a big Timothee Chalamet fan myself so I am a bit biased, but he spent so long planning for the part, getting into character and really trying to get into the Bob Dylan mindset, just to not win anything. I’ve never been much of a Bob Dylan fan, but after seeing this movie I was definitely interested in him. All the actors were incredible and the music was well done, but somehow it didn’t win anything.
The movie itself was nominated for 8 different awards, and did not win a single one? Honestly what’s the point in nominating a movie so many times and not even giving it anything?
Another movie I think was snubbed was ‘Challengers’. The movie didn’t get any nominations which is so insane to me. The camera work in it was so beautifully done and even though I got a little lost in the plot, I still enjoyed it. The score itself was my favorite part. It was so well done, without a doubt it should have been nominated.
Overall I’m not entirely mad about the Oscars. While there were a lot of snubs in my opinion, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s performances opening the Oscars were beautifully done, and was the highlight of the show for me, and I always enjoy seeing all the celebrities outfits (for the most part…Timothee Chalamet looked like The Man in The Yellow Hat from ‘Curious George’).
