The 67th annual Grammy Awards took place on February second in Los Angeles California. 2024 was an amazing year for the music industry, with almost every popular artist either releasing new music or going on tour. We got a new Taylor Swift album, a Beyonce album, a Sabrina Carpenter album and many other chart topping releases, making this year’s Grammys a tough one.
This year the Grammys decided that out of all 94 awards they have, only 9 would be shown on tv to allow more time for artists performances. I enjoyed this decision, as it allowed all the artists nominated for best new artist to have a short performance, as well as bigger names like Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan to have their time to shine.
Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter’s performances both blew me away. Roan performed her song ‘Pink Pony Club’ which she described as a “love letter to LA”. She performed on a giant My Little Pony like horse in a full cowgirl outfit along with her dancers in matching outfits along with clown makeup. Her stage presence is incredible, she can captivate such large audiences with her authentic pink and sparkly style.
Sabrina Carpenter also was one of my favorite performances, she performed a mashup of her songs ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please, Please, Please’ in a 50’s and 60’s jazz like style. Her performances always contain an outfit change of some sort, this time she turned her black sparkly suit into a baby blue bodysuit. Carpenter’s humor is also very present on stage as you can very clearly see her emotions when she sings.
The biggest snub of the Grammys in my opinion was Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift both not winning a single award. For me personally The Tortured Poets Department was my album of the year. I could go on and on about how genius her metaphors are and how beautiful the theming is. Taylor winning nothing is truly criminal. While Billie Eilish’s new albums were nothing new for her style of music, the vocals truly delivered and I think she should’ve won at least something. Both artists truly deserved better.
Another artist I was disappointed didn’t win was Clairo. She was nominated for ‘Alternative Album of the Year’ and ended up losing. Her album ‘Charm’ was beautifully crafted with her ‘soft’ music style standing out from others.
One thing I am happy about is Chappell Roan winning artist of the year. Last March I saw her perform as an opener for Olivia Rodrigo where nobody knew her, and I’m so glad everyone is giving her the love she deserves. Even when she preforms in venues where people dont know her, she still gives it her all and thats an amazing quality to have in an artist. Her album ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ combined with her unique style makes her an incredibly influential artist.
Another disappointment this year for me was Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” winning five grammys. I enjoyed the song, however I was disappointed he won both ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’. I think he should’ve just won ‘Record of the Year’ and another artist won ‘Song of the Year’. The song was good, but not five Grammys good.
Beyonce’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ album also won both ‘Country Album of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’. In my opinion, she didn’t deserve album of the year. I understand that she’s been nominated for numerous years and never won, but I truly think this year there were better options. However I was happy she won ‘Country Album of the Year’ and the award was presented to her by Taylor Swift.
Charli xcx had an incredible performance as well as three wins of the night. Her album ‘Brat’ this year influenced tons of people, ‘Brat Summer’ and ‘Brat Autum’ being two commonly used terms used this year. Her upbeat, electronic music is perfect for performances and it looks like she really enjoys herself on stage.
The Grammys overall despite a few wins I disagree with, was definitely successful. I enjoyed the new performance style despite the five minute commercials in between everything although I would’ve liked to see one or two more awards being given out. Everyone truely gave it their all with their performances this year and hopefully next year will be just as good, perhaps even better.
