On January 6th Liberty High School put into place a new hall pass system. This new system includes a different color coded pass for each hallway and a requirement to use that hallway’s bathrooms and stay close by.
Mr Paletta, a vice principal at OLHS was one of the people that helped install the new passes.
“Before passes we didn’t know where students were going,” Paletta says. “Theres a level of accountability, but at the same token, we need to know where the students are going”
The hallways each have their own colors and the room numbers on it. Students are also expected to use the bathroom closest to their hallway .
“Say there was an emergency at the school, we need students to be closest to their classroom” Paletta says “That’s where your parents/guardians expect you to be, and we can’t have you across the school”
Some students however do not like the new passes, a big drawback being the germs that collect on them from the bathrooms.
“They’re gross, they’re dumb and they’re unsanitary,” Sophomore Aly Janson says. “Kids are going to find a way to get around it.”
Some teachers have started keeping cleaning supplies by the passes so that when kids use them they can easily clean them off.
“You can easily wipe them down or spray them,” Paletta says. “Im looking at different solutions for next year but for now this was a low cost option”
Students are required to use these passes when temporarily leaving the classroom and will face consequences if not.
“Our goal is to approach you and hold you accountable” Patella says “ However If we see it multiple times then there could be a detention or a call home”
OLHS’s hall passes are a new system that is still being worked on, and are not set in stone forever.
“We know this system is not perfect in any means,” Patella says “but we think it’s a good first step in building a safe, inclusive and engaged school”
