As the winter chill settles in, a new wave of talented young athletes is ready to begin their season. The OLHS Girls’ basketball team is eager to tip-off, with players eager to showcase their skills and lead their teams to victory. Passionate players and determined athletes juniors Carson Cowell, Elle O’Brien, and senior Alex Elam share their hopes for the upcoming season.
“The season lasts about 6 months,” Cowell said. “It starts in October and ends in February or March depending on how far we go in the tournament.’
Last year, the basketball team made it to the regional semifinals and won districts, which broke existing school records.
“Last season went really well because we won districts which was a big goal for us,” O’Brien said.
The team’s athleticism and hard work were proven last year, and this season will be a testament to how much further they can go.
“This year our team is athletic, so we’re looking to run the floor a lot more and just be super fast transitionally,” Cowell said.
However, the team’s success is not only determined by their endurance, but also by their ability to work together and support each other.
“We are all super close and support each other on and off the court. We work hard to create a culture that can persist year after year,” Elam said. “The coaching staff and the team take pride in letting everyone in the community know how special the Liberty girls basketball program is.”
With team dynamics being key in the outcome of the season, this year the team is growing closer together.
“Our team is super close this year and the atmosphere is really fun and uplifting, so it’s easy for our team to get along and work together,” Cowell said.
The team continues to grow together with a supportive attitude succeeding in multiple aspects of the start of their basketball season.
“We have done a good job of creating a welcoming environment for everyone on the team from freshmen to seniors to coaches,” Elam said. “We all work super hard to help ourselves and our teammates succeed whether its in basketball, another sport, or school!”
