On Wednesday, December 3rd, Spotify released its annual Spotify Wrapped, providing users with insights into their listening habits, such as total minutes spent listening and top artists. However, this year’s Wrapped left many users underwhelmed compared to the expansive and creative features seen in 2023.
Last year, Spotify impressed users with engaging elements like detailed top genres, music taste reflections on a horoscopic level, and other unique features that felt thoughtful and on theme. “I was kind of just expecting more; I feel like last year set the bar really high,” said Saniya Teni, a senior at OLHS.
After speaking to other students, there seemed to be a shared sentiment that this year’s Wrapped felt short and simplistic. While it did include basic statistics—such as minutes listened, top five songs, top five artists, and monthly themed music—it lacked the creativity that made previous years memorable.
Some users even questioned the accuracy of the results. “I felt like I listened to my number one song maybe a couple of times but definitely not over 100 times,” said Teni.
Others speculated that Spotify may have relied more on AI this year to generate the results, which could explain the lack of personalized or standout features. “I could’ve waited a little longer for it to come out if I knew there was gonna be a fun feature on it,” Teni added.
Ultimately, many users were left wanting more from an annual tradition, and the hype died down quickly.
