On Wednesday, November 13, Liberty’s Youth Asian Student Society planned a Diwali fair in the auxiliary gym. The fair was open to everyone during all lunch periods and class periods in between. It included poster boards showing how different regions and states in India celebrated Diwali, snacks, music, dancing, and henna.
“I’m happy with the steps YASS has taken to fulfill its intrinsic vision,” One of the club’s founders, junior Michelle Huang said. “I look forward to branching out more and expanding our outreach.”
In the past school year, YASS has celebrated events such as garba and Chinese New Year. This year, they celebrated the festival by educating others about the holiday and providing fun activities for the students.
“I liked the henna, the artists were really talented,” Corinna Hilmas ‘25 said.
Club members and students enjoyed dancing to numerous songs throughout the day, one especially popular being “Rasputin”.
“People enjoyed the food the most, and the dancing,” Huang said. “We had the most turnout in henna, Varnika and Anisha facilitated it, they were really talented.”
They provided mini samosas and biscuits, which students were free to enjoy during the lunch periods. A carrom board was also provided, a fun Indian game similar to pool.
“I think it’s great that Liberty is providing our large Indian American community a way to celebrate customs,” Nikhil Ravilla ‘25 said. “The food ran out fast, it must’ve been so good.”
The club has encouraged students to engage and learn about cultural diversity and even inspired other schools to do the same by collaborating with them for cultural events, such as
“We’re moving on from the original founders to new leadership.” Another club founder, senior Anushka Chaba said. “We are currently looking for new people to apply to be a lead.”
