The Heisman Returns to SoCal

The Heisman is the biggest award in College Sports and is given to the “best” player in college football that year. The award is typically given to a Quarterback or an offensive skill position like Wide Receivers and Runningbacks. Six of the last seven Heismans were given to Quarterbacks and this year was not much different with all four Heisman candidates being Quarterbacks. The four candidates include TCU’s Max Duggan, Georgia’s Stetson Bennet, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, and the eventual winner USC’s Caleb Williams.

This is the first time the Heisman trophy went to a USC Trojan since Reggie Bush in 2005. Caleb Williams had arguably the best stats out of every quarterback in college this year. He led USC to a great record of 11-2 with a loss to Utah in the regular season and in the Pac 12 Championship.

“They’re not why Caleb does it. But they’re evidence that there’s a lot of great things going on. To think where it was 12 months ago to what this team’s accomplished, what this signifies here tonight — let’s be honest, Heisman winners don’t show up on average teams. You don’t get a shot. You’ve got to have a great team around you.” said Lincoln Riley, USC’s Headcoach. Coach Riley believes that Caleb Williams deserved this award 100%.

“I may be standing up here today, but y’all get to go to the College Football Playoff. Guess you can’t win them all,” said Caleb Williams. This quote just signifies Caleb William’s drive and hunger to get out on the field and start competing again. Even after winning the Heisman he still shows that it was just not enough and wants to be able to still be playing in the playoffs.

I think that Caleb Williams deserved to win this award because he just clearly was the most impactful player on the field and has amazing stats to back it up. As a buckeye fan, I would have loved to see C.J. Stroud win the Heisman but I admit Caleb Williams just played better this year. Max Duggan is an amazing leader and would not take the award for granted and Stetson Bennet just didn’t have the stats to put him in contention for the award.
