Global Support for a Devastated Pakistan

As Pakistan continues to recover from the estimated $40 billion in damages from the monumental flooding this summer, they look to the global community for help. With a population of around 220 million people and a country in ruin, they are in dire need of support. The United States, among many world-spanning nations, has taken up this call, and began the mission to help in any way that they can.

Business, legal, and financial news source, Reuters, shares that just this week, US officials have announced that there will be an additional $30 million in aid sent out to Pakistan, accumulating to $97 million pledged in total.  This money will help the USAID, or United States Agency for International Development, fund missions for appealing to immediate needs, as well as larger recovery projects.

The major focus will be on the southern Sindh Province, as shared by VOA news, as it was hit especially hard. This will stretch the recovery project’s reach to around four million people, of the total 33 million affected. A large portion of this fund will be devoted towards invaluable supplies of food, shelter supplies, winterization kits, and health assistance.

Along with this, the United Nations dramatically increased their outgoing humanitarian aid to Pakistan exponentially, now to $810 million, from a previous $160 million. This substantial increase in funding is the result of efforts to combat a newly developing wave of water-borne diseases materialized by the flooding.

This vital funding will also go towards reaching and assisting areas that were previously inaccessible during the height of the flooding. These regions in particular are devastated due to the reality that the people who once lived there are returning to nothing. They are now forced to live, bathe, drink and eat from the same disease ridden waters that destroyed everything they knew and relied upon.

When disaster strikes, those who are able to help are compelled to respond. Not only nations, and coalitions, but individuals as well.
