The OLHS Dance Team Goes to States

On February 26th the Olentangy Liberty High School Dance team made Liberty history by going to states, proving the 2021-2022 is the dance team’s year to shine.

The dance team at liberty is a fairly new team, being created only a few years ago by two current seniors. Last year, they posted videos to social media of their dances and had practices with the team but this year they have made steps to stand out as an official group. During the fall, the dance team started performing near the student section at football games and performed at the homecoming bonfire. They also started competing in a state dance circuit.

“This year has come with a lot of new and exciting changes,” says sophomore returning member Kimaya Chaubal, “I enjoyed being a part of the dance team last year but this year has been an amazing experience. Performing at football games was nerve racking at first but quickly became one my favorite parts of this season.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the dance team recorded their dance to submit for most of their competitions. Luckily, states was in person on February 26th and the team was able to perform and watch other groups. They performed with a hip-hop number and a pom number. They ended up placing 10th in pom and 8th in hip hop.

“We were so excited at the results of the competition. We worked really hard and just qualifying for states made it worth it.”, says Chaubal.

The dance team accomplished a difficult task this year. They went from being a small student led group to qualifying and placing at states. The dance team hopes to go even further and honor the graduating seniors who built the program in the following years.
