KFC’s Beyond Fried Chicken review

The popular fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken recently announced a collaboration with Beyond Meat where they would join forces to create Beyond Fried Chicken. After seeing the collaboration get torn to shreds on Twitter and one user calling the meatless nuggets ‘fried erasers’, I was very interested in trying the new meal. I am nowhere near a vegan or vegetarian but I have recently been choosing meatless options over the ladder. The only issue I have with things like tofu or seitan or any other plant-based protein is that it takes a lot of time to make it.

I have to drain the tofu, coat it in cornstarch, pan fry it to the perfect amount so it’s crunchy on the outside but not too crunchy that it burns — it’s a long process. So with this plant-based protein creation coming to fast food, I was very excited to try them. I called my nearest KFC to ask if they were carrying the Beyond Friend Chicken and the worker replied with an annoyed ‘yea.’ So I headed over and ordered a 6-piece meal while they also offer a 12-piece option. I forgot to ask for  sauce with my nuggets so that will also affect my rating. I also had to wait about 5-minutes for my food. Not a huge deal but it was just another detail to note.

When I dove into the food I was so eager to try,  I took one out of the classic rectangular box, the  “Beyond Fried Chicken” strewn across the top in neon green. The nuggets themselves were unnaturally square but the amount of breading on the outside of the nugget made up for it. They had a great crunch but were generally flavorless. The “meat” in the nuggets was somewhat similar to chicken, but in reality, I don’t think the meat was anything than slices of tofu.

When I got home, I continued to eat my food, but I grabbed some ranch from my fridge to mask the grease flavor of the nuggets.
