Top 25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2021

Top+25+Most+Anticipated+Movies+of+2021

Carson Zorn, Writer

I think it’s safe to say that 2020 was a pretty unusual year for the movie industry, and it pretty much made my “Top 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2020” list invalid. So, I’m going to try again, and hope that this year can be a somewhat normal year for the movies. When I went through all the expected 2021 movie releases, I ended up with about 45 movies that I’m really looking forward to. But I am in no way going to write nor make you read about 45 movies. So I will just list numbers 45-26 as my “Honorable Mentions”, and write nothing else about them and then give you my top 25 most anticipated movies for 2021, with a little blurb for each of those 25. (I originally wanted to do 21 movies, but the amount of movies coming out this year made it impossible.)

Honorable Mentions (#45-26):

“Wicked,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Coming 2 America,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Halloween Kills,” “Nomadland,” “The King’s Man,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Free Guy,” “The Green Knight,” “The Father,” “The Last Duel,” “Red Notice”, “Pinnochio,” “The Matrix 4,” “Malcom and Marie,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Black Adam”

25. “Blonde”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1655389/

This movie has all the makings of a fantastic, Oscar-worthy flick. First off, the story is going to be fascinating. From what I’ve read, it’s going to be a somewhat fantasized retelling of the life of Marilyn Monroe, one of the most interesting actresses of old Hollywood. The screenwriter and director doesn’t have many movies to his name, but the movies he’s made have been pretty good. But more importantly, Ana de Armas is one of my favorite actresses working today, and she is on a meteoric rise. Her breakout role in “Knives Out” opened the eyes of Hollywood to her as a lead actress, and I think this could very well be the movie that affirms just about everyone’s belief about her talent, and could earn her an Oscar. It will supposedly be released on Netflix, and I can’t wait to see it.

24. “West Side Story”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3581652/?ref_=tt_mv_close

Why am I excited for this movie? Two words: Steven Spielberg. The man who brought us “Indiana Jones,” “Jurassic Park” and “E.T.” is directing a “West Side Story” remake. I’m a big fan of musicals (and there are a couple more on this list), and “West Side Story” is a classic. The cast is great, the music is great, and the images that have been released look great. It seems like it will try to be an awards contender, but all I need is an entertaining two hours at the movies and I’ll be happy, and I think that’s exactly what I’m going to get.

23. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahZFCF–uRY

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4513678/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

This was on my list last year, and while it has moved down a couple places, I am still very, very excited about this movie. I love the original two “Ghostbusters” movies, and did not like the 2016 reboot whatsoever. This movie is supposedly ignoring the 2016 reboot, and will be a spirit sequel to the original “Ghostbusters” movies. It also is directed by the son of the original “Ghostbusters” movie, so that’s all the more reason to trust the team behind this movie. The cast looks great, and I’ll watch anything with Paul Rudd in it, so this movie has my attention.

22. “Death on the Nile”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM1U-Whb-P0

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7657566/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Another movie that was on my list last year, the sequel to 2017’s “Murder on the Orient Express” and based off of the novel by Agatha Christie. I actually had the pleasure of reading the novel over quarantine and it made me all the more excited to see how Kenneth Branagh is going to pull the story off on the big screen. The cast is filled with some A-List Hollywood stars including Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer (although I don’t really know what’s going on with him), Emma Mackey and of course, Kenneth Branagh himself. I’m a sucker for a good mystery, so there’s a good chance I end up loving this movie.

21. “Morbius”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLMBLuGJTsA

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5108870/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

This is the first of many Marvel movies on this list, as it seems like Marvel is posed to have a big year. Jared Leto gets a second chance as a famous comic book villain, after his less than stellar reception as Joker in 2016’s “Suicide Squad.” I was originally skeptical of this movie when it was first announced, but the trailer made me forget all of my worries. From the amazing horror-action combination, to the Vulture cameo at the end, the trailer has made me so incredibly excited for this movie, and I can’t wait for its release.

20. “Godzilla vs Kong”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odM92ap8_c0

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5034838/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

First off, that is the newest poster for the movie, and it looks AWESOME! Whoever at Warner Bros. designed that poster deserves a raise. As far as the movie goes, this is the definition of a “popcorn flick.” Will the story make any sense? Probably not. Will I care? Probably not. I will be watching this movie to see a CGI-heavy battle between two legendary monsters, and I think that’s exactly what I’m going to get. The previous movies in the “Monster Cinematic Universe” (“Godzilla” (2014), “Kong: Skull Island,” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”) have some of the worst writing and dialogue ever, but they fully deliver on the monster vs monster action. So, even if the fight is only 10 minutes long, it will be worth the price of admission (or, alternatively, the price of my HBO Max subscription).

19. “tick, tick…Boom!”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8721424/?ref_=vp_back

Like I said, I’m a big fan of musicals, and here’s another one. This will be Lin-Mauel Miranda’s (of “Hamilton”, and “In the Heights” fame) movie directorial debut. The cast includes Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp and Bradley Whitford. I had never heard of this musical before, but given Miranda’s fantastic track record with musicals, I can’t wait to see it.

18. “A Quiet Place Part II”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEMwSdne6UE

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8332922/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

When this movie was announced, I was not interested at all. “A Quiet Place” is one of my favorite modern horror movies, and I did not see any reason at all to ruin it with a sequel. But, since the trailer looked so good, I am cautiously optimistic. One thing that has made me feel a little better about the movie is that John Krasinski is returning as the director, and if he is able to replicate the success of the first one, the wait will have totally been worth it.

17. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9376612/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

The second, but certainly not the last, Marvel entry on our list is one of the four MCU movies coming out this year. Not much has been revealed about this movie, no trailer, no big poster, not even any set photos. But part of the reason I’m so excited for it is the element of the unknown. So, I will be eagerly awaiting the first trailer for this movie, and it might move up my list if the trailer is amazing. Either way, I can’t wait for this movie.

16. “In the Heights”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0CL-ZSuCrQ

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1321510/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3

I wasn’t lying about the amount of musicals on this list. Ever since this movie was announced, I’ve been anxiously waiting for it. This musical was originally debuted on Broadway, and written by the aforementioned Lin-Manuel Miranda. When the first trailer was released, my hype level shot through the roof, but since the movie was delayed a year, it has moved a couple places down my list. But, I am still over the moon excited about it, and I can’t wait for it to come out this year (hopefully).

15. “Mission Impossible 7”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9603212/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

The “Mission Impossible” movies just keep getting better with each installment. The most recent film in the franchise, “Mission Impossible: Fallout”, is not only my favorite of the series, but is one of my favorite action movies of all time. With the same talent returning in front of and behind the camera, I can’t wait to see what this movie has in store.

14. “Candyman”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlwzuZ9kOQU

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9347730/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

I’ll be honest, I don’t have a lot to say about this movie. It just looks amazing. The trailer is fantastic, and it makes it look like this movie will be somewhat of a psychological horror movie, which I absolutely love. I will likely be somewhat disappointed by this movie because of how high my expectations for it are, but if it somehow manages to meet my sky high expectations, it might just be my favorite movie of 2021.

13. “Sherlock Holmes 3”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2094116/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Alright, I’m going to make a bold statement that will be very controversial. The Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies are the best in-screen incarnation of the character. Both “Sherlock Holmes” and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” are amazing movies with great performances from every single cast member. “Game of Shadows” ended on such a cliffhanger, and now it’s been ten years since that movie came out. But, given that Downey is no longer tied up with Avengers movies, he finally has the time to make this movie, and I can’t wait.

12. “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM-Bja2Gy04

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12361974/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

I remember when “Justice League” first came out in 2017. I was so excited to see it. I had grown up watching Justice League cartoons, and was the biggest fan of the Flash. When I saw the movie, I was extremely disappointed. Not only was the movie underwhelming in general, it also felt like a completely different story than Zack Snyder was trying to tell. It did not feel like a continuation of the themes Snyder introduced in “Man of Steel” and “Batman vs Superman.” Then I discovered that was because Joss Wheedon took over as director, and basically made an entirely different movie than Snyder wanted. The whole reason this movie got made was because of an online movement where fans demanded that Warner Bros. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. Even if the movie isn’t great, it’s still extremely impressive that an online movement made it happen. But I do think the movie will be good. The trailers have gotten me super excited for the movie, and the fact that the movie is 4 hours long means there’s going to be a lot more new material. If this is the last we see of Zack Snyder’s vision for the DCEU, I’m confident that he’ll want to go out with a bang.

11. “Eternals”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9032400/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Another Marvel movie, this one is packed with an all-star cast including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani. Similar to “Shang-Chi” not much is known about this movie, but the rumors circulating have me really excited for what this movie could be. I’ll trust anything Marvel does at this point, and this is no different, I’ll be anxiously awaiting the day I can see this in a theater.

10. “Dune”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9xhJrPXop4

IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1160419/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

This is a lot of people’s biggest movie this year, and for good reason. First off, one of the best directors currently working, Denis Villeneuve, is at the helm of this movie. Then there’s the cast, which includes: Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem and Stellan Skarsgard, just to name a few. It’s also based on the best-selling novel by Frank Herbert. While it’s not my number one movie of the year, I am so excited for it, and wish it was coming out sooner.

9. “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7097896/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

As DJ Khaled always says “Another one!” So, yes this is another Marvel movie on this list, and (Spoiler Alert!) it’s not the last one. I enjoyed the first “Venom” movie way more than most of the world, so I’ve been waiting for this sequel ever since the post-credits scene left off on a huge cliffhanger. Tom Hardy is fantastic as Eddie Brock/Venom and now this movie is adding Woody Harrelson to the fold as Cletus Cassidy/Carnage. There are going to be some amazing action sequences in this one, and quite possibly an appearance by Spider-Man (All based on rumors), so there’s a lot to look forward to in this one.

8. “Black Widow”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybji16u608U

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3480822/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

I’ve been waiting for this movie for what feels like forever. While the timing for this movie is somewhat questionable (Releasing a solo Black Widow movie after she’s already dead?) I am still nonetheless excited to see what it has to offer. Scarlett Johansson is fantastic as Black Widow, and with the additions of Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour, this cast is fantastic. With their fantastic track record, I’ll trust anything Marvel Studios releases at this point, and I can’t wait for this movie to finally come out on the big screen.

7. “Luca”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdAIBlPVe9s

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12801262/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

I am one of the biggest Pixar fans in the world, and other than “Cars 2”, I have loved every one of their movies, and their most recent release “Soul” was one of my favorite movies of 2020. I know close to nothing about this movie, but I will watch and be over the moon excited for anything Pixar releases at this point, so I can’t wait for this one.

6. “Old”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB1m-WogYeg

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10954652/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_7

Night Shyamalan has a very hit-and-miss track record as a filmmaker, as he has made some masterpieces, such as “The Sixth Sense,” and some truly awful movies, like “The Last Airbender.” Despite the inconsistency in quality, I am always very interested in his movies, and this one is no different. I didn’t really know what this movie was about until the Super Bowl spot last night, but the premise seems very interesting. There are also some of my favorite up and coming talents acting in the movie, specifically actress Thomasin McKenzie. So, while I don’t fully trust Shyamalan to make this movie great, I am excited for it nonetheless.

5. “No Time to Die”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw2FOYjCz38

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2382320/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

This movie almost feels like it’s never going to come out. But when it finally does, I have a really strong feeling it’s going to be amazing. Daniel Craig is a great James Bond, and given that this is his final Bond film, I think he’ll want to go out with a bang. Add on to that the talents of Rami Malek as the villian, and Ana de Armas as a CIA Agent, this movie seems to be the perfect sendoff for Craig. I have no clue how many times this has been pushed back, but hopefully it’s worth the wait.

4. “The Suicide Squad”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5uPgNoSHJw

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6334354/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Words cannot describe how excited I am for this movie, but I’ll try. The cast for this movie is phenomenal, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is one of the best comic book movie castings ever. While 2016’s “Suicide Squad” was not great by any means, I did enjoy it more than most other people. But this movie has a lot of different cast members, and a different creative team behind it. Most importantly James Gunn is directing this movie. In case that name doesn’t ring a bell, he directed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies. Since I’ve already watched him make two great movies about a group of misfits who accidentally become heroes, I think Gunn was the perfect choice for this movie. The trailer made me even more excited than I already was, and I can’t wait to see this one on the big screen.

3. “Spider-Man: No Way Home”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10872600/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1

While it may be controversial, Tom Holland is my favorite iteration of Spider-Man. I love both “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Far From Home,” so it makes sense that the next Spider-Man MCU adventure is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. There have been a lot of rumors floating around about this movie, and even if only half of them come true, it will still be an amazing movie. The biggest rumor is that the previous two big screen iterations of Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, will return, alongside some of their famous villains, Doc Ock and Electro. There are also rumors that Charlie Cox, known for playing Daredevil, was spotted on set. While I usually don’t like it when Spider-Man movies get over-crowded, this feels like the good kind of over-crowded. I can’t wait for December so I can finally see how many of these rumors are true.

2. “The French Dispatch”

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcPk2p0Zaw4

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8847712/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors working today, and while his films aren’t going to be for everyone, they certainly work for me. His style is so unique and it allows me to enjoy every single one of his films. I’m so excited to see what he does with a story about journalists, and with this all-star cast.

1. “Last Night in Soho”

IMDb Page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9639470/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

While this may be somewhat of a surprising pick for general audiences for my most anticipated movie of the year. Edgar Wright is directing this film, and he is my favorite director of all time. His movies always feel fun and fresh. He’s only directed five movies, but all five of them are in my top movies of all time. This movie also has a fantastic cast with two of my favorite up and coming actresses, Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie. I don’t know much about the plot, and I don’t need to, I can’t wait for this movie.
