Everyone who’s been to a theater knows that watching something while in theaters is a huge contrast to watching at home—especially when it falls into the genre of horror.
Sinners is a 2 hour paranormal masterpiece that premiered on April 3, 2025, but hit the big screen in the United States on April 18, 2025. But, what makes it so great? The movie tells a beautiful and tragic story about family, love, and music while keeping the thrill in the thriller. It truly displays relationships and character growths in such a touching way that captures your attention.
The movie was written, co-produced, and directed by Ryan Coogler and set in the Mississippi Delta in 1932. Sinners follows the story of a family, twin brothers Smoke and Stack–both played by Michael B. Jordan—and their cousin, Sammie–played by Miles Caton. When returning to their hometown, the twins buy off a property to make a juke joint—a place for the local black community to spend some money, have a good time, and enjoy the blues—but with the fun of it all short lived.
Along with the story, the visuals throughout the movie feel so natural in their timing. The movie is a beautiful blend of mystery and foreshadowing that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. But of course, there’s a reason for this being a rated R movie. This movie has beautiful special effects, especially the gory parts.
One of the best parts of a horror movie is the fear factor, and what this movie lacks in jumpscares, it makes up for in the general effects. The lighting, music, and acting all come together to really set the right mood throughout the whole movie. Both the instrumental backgrounds and lyrical masterpieces will have you humming the tunes after you leave the theater. Each song brings together elements from the blues to Irish folk music.
Sinners as a whole is one of the best horror movies of this year if not the best. Whether it’s a love for the paranormal, a love for music, or an overall love for horror as a genre; Sinners is definitely one worth watching.
