Thursday night, the Liberty Patriots girls volleyball team played against Dublin Coffman for the regional semifinals. With packed stands and racing hearts for the players and coaches, the Patriots came out on top after the five set match, advancing them into the regional finals, and on the path for states.

The girls volleyball team has made it through major obstacles this year, becoming the first varsity volleyball team in the school’s history to be undefeated in regular season matches and getting the furthest in the states tournament.

“It has been a great season, not only just because of our record and our accomplishments, but it’s been a lot of fun to work with these girls,” head coach, Jen Chapman, states.

The players gave everything they had on the court, and the score showed it. After losing the first set 21-25, the Patriots came out and dominated the next two sets, winning 25-16 and 25-20. Coffman recovered and took the fourth set 14-25, but in the final set, the Patriots resumed their streak and won 15-11. The crowd became eccentric after senior middle hitter, Abby Erickson, got the final kill of the night, assuring Liberty’s spot in the next round.

“I don’t think in school history we’ve ever beaten Coffman, at least as long as I’ve been here. It feels so amazing to be apart of it, and to be able to share this win with my teammates,” Erickson said after the match.

In total, the team had 135 hits, with 72 of them being kills through the night. Junior Claranne Fechter led the outside hitters with 54 hits and 28 kills. The sophomore setter, Logan Flaugh, totaled 61 assists through the five sets, only having one error. Senior libero, Maile Steckelberg, led the passers with 20 digs and 6 assists by the end of the night.

They play again on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at Worthington Kilbourne against Olentangy Orange, whom they have beaten twice in regular season matches. Please come out and support the Patriots!
